Explore the data engineering credential for building and operating cloud data systems.

Who this exam is for

Data Engineer is aimed at people designing and operating data systems, not only querying their outputs. The guide follows data through processing design, ingestion, storage, analysis, and automated maintenance. It fits engineers who must balance how data arrives with how reliably and efficiently others can use it. A useful preparation project should therefore include operational decisions and changes over time, rather than ending as soon as the first successful result appears.

Google recommends: 3+ years of industry experience including 1+ years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud. Source.

Professional Data Engineer: scope and next steps

What you will study

Google’s certification page lists these assessment areas. Use them to orient your preparation, then read the linked exam guide for the detailed objectives. The list is not a question count or a promise of what will appear on your exam.

  • Design data processing systems
  • Ingest and process the data
  • Store the data
  • Prepare and use data for analysis
  • Maintain and automate data workloads

Requirements are not the same as preparation

Prerequisites stated by Google: None. No formal prerequisite does not mean no experience is needed. Review Google’s recommended experience and the official sample questions before deciding how much preparation you need.

Check the standard exam details below before booking. Renewal options can have different eligibility, formats and prices; they are not a shorter first-certification route. Confirm current availability directly with Google.

How it compares with PMLE

Data Engineer emphasizes collecting, processing, storing and preparing data for analysis. PMLE extends into model training, evaluation, serving and monitoring. Data pipelines connect the two roles, but their exam guides set different preparation priorities. Compare the PMLE exam guide.

Testero’s available PMLE diagnostic does not assess Professional Data Engineer readiness. The notification form is for a future Testero diagnostic, not Google exam registration. No Testero launch date is promised.

Make a plan before choosing practice

Mark the guide objectives you can already explain or perform, then set aside time for the gaps. Our free study planner can turn the guide weights into a time budget. It does not measure your skills or include a question bank for this exam.

How to prepare

  1. Check whether you are preparing for the standard or renewal exam and open the corresponding guide. Google provides both guides and a separate skills renewal option; verify the path rather than transferring format assumptions between them.
  2. Sketch a data processing system with explicit ingestion, storage, and analysis needs. Compare design choices against those requirements and identify the conditions that would make you reconsider a choice as volume or usage changes.
  3. Use Google Cloud Skills Boost labs to practice moving and transforming data, then inspect how the workflow is maintained. Include a failed input or interrupted run in your reasoning so that recovery receives attention alongside initial setup.
  4. Work through the official sample questions and link unfamiliar decisions back to the relevant guide section. Close your review by explaining how you would automate the workload and detect degraded results; sample answers alone are not evidence of complete preparation.
