Google Cloud certification path: all 15 certs compared

Updated

Summary: This Google Cloud certification path compares all 15 certifications in our catalog by level, role and recommended experience. Foundational credentials cover business understanding; associate credentials cover cloud operations, data work or Workspace administration; professional credentials focus on engineering responsibilities. These are related paths, not a required ladder: you do not need to collect every level first.

How the certification paths fit together

Write down the decisions you want to make more confidently. Are you choosing infrastructure, shipping application code, operating a data pipeline, or investigating alerts? Those are different study plans. A certification title is useful only if its scope matches your intended work.

The recommendations below are editorial guidance, not Google prerequisites or a required progression. The 15 official certification pages checked for this comparison state Prerequisites: None. Their recommended experience is a separate signal about preparation. It is not a mandatory employment history requirement, and it does not mean that completing a smaller certification is required first.

Experience still matters when choosing where to spend your time. If an exam's responsibilities are mostly unfamiliar, use its guide to identify practical work to try before booking. If you already perform those responsibilities, a foundational exam need not be your default starting point.

Foundational: business understanding

Choose one of these when your goal is to discuss capabilities, use cases, and adoption with technical teams. Do not choose them as substitutes for proving hands-on implementation skills.

CertificationBest fit: editorial interpretationGoogle’s recommended experience
Cloud Digital LeaderExplaining cloud capabilities and business use cases, rather than operating workloads.Experience collaborating with technical professionals
Generative AI LeaderEvaluating business opportunities and responsible adoption of generative AI; not an engineering implementation credential. Not stated as a recommended-experience requirement. Google says any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience.

Cloud Digital Leader is our pick for broad cloud-business conversations. Generative AI Leader is the narrower choice when the immediate problem is evaluating generative AI opportunities. Google explicitly describes the latter as open to people in any job role, with or without hands-on technical experience. Its page does not state a recommended number of years; do not invent one.

Associate: paths by working environment

These three certifications are not interchangeable entry points. Workspace administration is different from running Google Cloud infrastructure, and working with data is its own scope.

CertificationBest fit: editorial interpretationGoogle’s recommended experience
Associate Cloud EngineerDeploying, securing, monitoring, and maintaining cloud applications and infrastructure.6+ months hands on experience with Google Cloud
Associate Data PractitionerPreparing and ingesting data, analyzing it, orchestrating pipelines, and managing data.6+ months of experience working with data on Google Cloud.
Associate Google Workspace AdministratorAdministering Workspace users, Gmail, Drive, sharing, security, and everyday collaboration issues.6 months of Google Workspace Super Admin experience in a real or test environment. Hands-on experience with Business Plus edition and knowledge of Enterprise Edition features and functionality.

Our recommendation: choose Associate Cloud Engineer for general cloud operations, Associate Data Practitioner for hands-on data tasks, and Workspace Administrator if your daily responsibility is the collaboration environment. Someone who manages users and sharing permissions does not need a cloud networking study plan merely because both products are from Google.

The six-month recommendations describe different experience. Six months using Google Cloud data services is not the same as six months as a Workspace Super Admin. Read the qualification, not just the number.

Professional: paths by engineering responsibility

Professional is not a single general-purpose destination. Choose a role first. The following groups make the comparison easier; they are editorial groupings, not additional Google certification levels.

Architecture, software, and production infrastructure

CertificationBest fit: editorial interpretationGoogle’s recommended experience
Professional Cloud ArchitectTurning business requirements into secure, scalable solutions and making architecture trade-offs.3+ years of industry experience including 1+ years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud
Professional Cloud DeveloperBuilding cloud-native applications and owning the software development lifecycle.3+ years of industry experience including 1+ years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud.
Professional Cloud DevOps EngineerImproving delivery pipelines, reliability, observability, and production operations.3+ years of industry experience including 1+ years designing and managing production systems using Google Cloud
Professional Cloud Network EngineerDesigning and managing VPC networks, routing, load balancing, and hybrid connectivity.3+ years of industry experience including 1+ years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud

A useful distinction: choose Cloud Architect when the central work is solution design and cross-system trade-offs. Choose Cloud Developer when it is application implementation. Choose Cloud DevOps Engineer when it is reliable delivery and production operation. Choose Cloud Network Engineer when network architecture and connectivity are the main responsibility. An engineer may do all four kinds of work; pick the one you want to examine in depth now.

Data, databases, ML, and agentic systems

CertificationBest fit: editorial interpretationGoogle’s recommended experience
Professional Cloud Database EngineerDesigning, managing, and troubleshooting application databases on Google Cloud.5+ years of overall database and IT experience, including 2 years of hands-on experience working with Google Cloud database solutions
Professional Data EngineerBuilding data infrastructure that collects, transforms, stores, and delivers data.3+ years of industry experience including 1+ years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud.
Professional Machine Learning EngineerBuilding, evaluating, productionizing, and optimizing AI solutions, including ML and foundation-model solutions.3+ years of industry experience including 1 or more years designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud.
Professional Agentic ArchitectDesigning and managing autonomous agentic workflows, with reliability, cost, security, and scale in view.3+ years of hands-on experience building, testing, deploying, and managing cloud solutions including 1+ years building agentic solutions using Google Cloud

Database engineering centers on application database solutions. Data engineering centers on the infrastructure that moves, transforms, and delivers data. Machine Learning Engineer focuses on building and operating AI solutions. Agentic Architect focuses on autonomous agentic workflows. Do not pick among them by the presence of “AI” in a project description; compare the responsibilities you actually own.

Cloud Database Engineer has a different experience recommendation from the common three-year professional pattern. Agentic Architect also specifies hands-on cloud-solution experience and agentic-solution experience. Those distinctions are worth preserving rather than treating every professional exam as the same preparation commitment.

Security design versus security operations

CertificationBest fit: editorial interpretationGoogle’s recommended experience
Professional Cloud Security EngineerDesigning secure workloads, access controls, policies, and data and network protection.3+ years of industry experience including more than 1 year designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud
Professional Security Operations EngineerDetecting, investigating, and responding to threats; detection rules, threat hunting, and response automation.3+ years of security industry experience including 1+ years using Google Cloud security tooling

Our dividing question is: are you primarily building the controls, or investigating and responding when something looks wrong? Cloud Security Engineer is the closer fit for secure workload and infrastructure design. Security Operations Engineer is the closer fit for detection and response. There is overlap, but choosing the dominant responsibility gives you a clearer study target.

Agentic Architect: check availability before planning

Do not assume every catalog entry is immediately bookable. The registry records Agentic Architect as closed beta with general availability upcoming. The fetched official page says “GA registration opens Nov 2” and separately says the GA exam will launch in mid-November. Registration opening and exam launch are not the same event.

Neither of those short date statements supplies a year. We have not silently expanded them into a full dated launch promise. As checked October 16, 2026, treat this as an upcoming option and recheck Google's page before booking or scheduling study around availability. The page also contains beta-candidate instructions; those are not a general registration route for a new candidate.

Map a path from your current responsibilities

Use the level and role comparison to outline a preparation path:

  1. Name your target responsibility. Prefer “operate production services” to “get a cloud badge.”
  2. Compare the matching rows. Use the recommended experience to find gaps, not as a permission slip or an exclusion rule.
  3. Open Google's current exam guide from the certification page. Match its objectives to a project you can discuss concretely. Product names and assessed scope can change.
  4. Choose one preparation track. Do not add another certification just to postpone working on the gaps in the first one.

If you are still split between two tracks, sketch a real task from each. For architecture versus development, compare a solution-design exercise with implementing a service. For data engineering versus ML engineering, compare building a data pipeline with deploying and monitoring an AI solution. Our recommendation is to start with the task closest to the work you want next, not to assume one certification unlocks the other.
